{this moment} on two continents! 14 March 2014

{Full disclosure ~ I have never been good with goodbye's and I am actually posting this farewell post on May 6th.  ALmost two months past the intended date.}

Each week my South African friend Vanessa and I post {this moment} on two continents! as a ritual to celebrate our friendship and the bond we share as we raise our boys "together" on opposite sides of the globe.

And if you can believe it ~ this post is the final post in our year of sharing {this moment} together and with our community of friends and family.  It has been such a gift, and such an amazing blessing to experience this year somewhat simultaneously on opposite sides of the world.  I felt disoriented at times when I imagined my "sister" experiencing the alternate seasonal reality of our own here in the northern hemisphere.  Sometimes the only things that could have tied the thread of pictures together was the fact that our friendship has bridged the gap between the continents and across the opposite seasons. For example, when Aidan was shoveling sand in January, and Miles & Ruben were literally shoveling heaps of snow from our driveway.  And yet we always seemed to connect across the distance with the universal themes that make us all human in this parenting game.  We were both watching our children and learning endless amounts through the wonder in their eyes. Over the year we have loved them as only a parent can.  We have watched as they delighted in music, experienced the amazement of imaginative play, or felt crushed by the defeats of their struggles.

This was the serendipity of the human experience that connected us of course; and subsequently made the synchronicity of our weekly updates, at times,  fill me with disbelief.  At the very beginning our first posts had our boys in stores with shopping carts. This was simple and seemingly unexceptional, but it continued to happen again and again! There was the concert in South Africa paired with the piano lesson in the US. There was also the week we both photographed our babies with our own siblings. Often we captured the love we feel for our children's fathers and the amazing relationships between father and son we watch unfold in front of us every day.  Spending time in nature was also a common theme. Something I know that Vanessa and I are both cherishing the opportunity to share our own passion for the outdoors with our children.

So, it seems fitting, that our last post will end as we began.  We were obviously "on the same page" as we often are. (As much as two friends can be that do not get to see or even talk to each other nearly enough. Two friends who have not even been able to meet the babies they carried through pregnancy together. Yet, with the beautiful ability of technology we have shared this epic year of moments ~ together ~ watching our boys grow before our eyes.)

The last post began when Vanessa sent me this photo of Aidan, who was watching a mongoose outside his window.

"We have really noticed the shift in the season... Windy as often is all year, but with a chill in the air. Not surprising as the wind comes from Antartica! Also, the evening sunset sun light is streaming through the playroom and into the lounge as or did last Sept. This house is like living on a clock face or sundial... The roundness and the angle of the sun is so noticeable :)I love it! The patio is getting more sun as is the upstairs room which makes it cosier in winter."

At the same time I had taken a picture of Miles watching the very first robin to appear outside our own window.
This is the first open piece of grass we have seen without snow cover since the fall, and there was one lone robin searching hungrily about.  Miles noticed it and watched curiously as the robin hunted for food!  We have been looking everywhere for signs that this harsh winter is behind us; but today watching this bird appear was welcome news that spring has arrived!

When I sent the image to V she had this response;
"Wow.. That is amazing synchronicity again Sal!!  Both great messengers too :)

So there you have it. The year in pictures. A year shared between friends watching their babies grow, and experiencing the world together through the wonder in their eyes.

I do not know what will come next. Whether it will include this space. Or if we will find another forum for our creativity and the passion we share about teaching our boys about the world around them.  I will miss this weekly ritual, but I will forever cherish this experience.  I look forward to the day our boys can meet and play together!

Each week my South African friend Vanessa and I post {this moment} on two continents! as a ritual to celebrate our friendship and the bond we share as we raise our boys "together" on opposite sides of the globe.

As the year of our connection through posting {this moment} weekly draws to a close V and I both took a moment to ourselves to ponder our next steps.  What's ahead as we continue this journey together as mothers and friends?  Only time will tell.  :-)

This week we were reminded of the simple things that make this life feel magical.  And reminded to take the time to stand and recognize its blessings whenever possible.

It was a hard week as we lost our beloved pet and friend of seven years, Spirit. So my pictures this week are memories of Spirit, pictures of the tree we planted in memory, and of its flowers & berries that will attract birds.

One of my favorite things about our weekly posts is celebrating the dichotomy of our seasonal experience. This week in the US we hunkered down for yet another winter storm. I found myself very grateful for the warmth of my home. I became very aware of the dichotomy of our own indoor and outdoor experience; I became even more grateful of the shelter we call home.

 On the other side of the globe in ZA there are green leafy trees & beach days still to be had! Aidan likes swinging into the giant rosemary bush under the camphor trees.

Each week my South African friend Vanessa and I post {this moment} on two continents! as a ritual to celebrate our friendship and the bond we share as we raise our boys "together" on opposite sides of the globe.

Our week was filled with "presents." Here in Michigan we were so grateful for the presence of sunshine in our lives this week. We literally found reasons to linger in the windows and bask in the sunlight we have been missing so much!
Ruben stood in the sunlight and helped me do the dishes.

We decided to celebrate the lengthening days by having breakfast for dinner. We were grateful for the gift of maple syrup on our waffles! These are the simple pleasures we try to celebrate each day. - United States

Far away our friends celebrated the gift of welcoming a new member to their family!!  Meet Mila, a Black Russian terrier, who is sure to become Aidan's new best friend! - South Africa

It was also exciting to hear that the package we mailed (about six weeks ago now) finally made its way around the world! Among the gifts was the Soule Family book, The Rhythm of Family:Discovering a Sense of Wonder Through the Seasons, that inspired our own United States & South African {this moment} collaboration. It felt really special to send a copy of this book to a friend who shares my own passion for celebrating the seasons and the wonders of nature.

Finally, when I asked Miles what he wanted to send his friend far away, he answered with a resounding, " a great lakes shirt like mine"  So that is what we did. It is amazing to see Aidan wearing it, and also knowing how much love was sent along with our gifts to our friends!  For now, we continue to dream of the gift of being in each others presence.  I cannot wait for the day our boys will play together!!  Right now I am thankful for the gift of technology that allows us to share so much of each others lives. <3

I think the only thing better than family, is good food + family!  We love to make pizza for dinner at our house.  This week my boys wanted to put on their pajamas before dinner so they could "relax" while they were eating the pizza they worked so hard to help me make.

So far this New Year has not been gentle with us.  We have begun with the blizzard produced by the famed "polar vortex," and a few catastrophic events at the family business - no big deal.   Aside from the fact that I adore working with this man that I love; we are tired and we sure could use a break. So - if you are getting a full nights rest at your house, and things seem calm and boring on your home front, please appreciate the peace, and send some of those vibes our way - fast!

I must say that I adore the differences in these two pictures. In the US we are huddled by candlelight, and in South Africa they are sitting on the deck in the sunlight!  The wonders of this earth and our seasons never cease to amaze me.
